I think Charlemagne had a positive affect because he helped stop Muslim invasions, he gave people a place to live after the war, and he stopped the Mors from threatening Pyrenees any more.
The castle brought protection to the people by giving them a place to stay if there were enemies close by and they had battlements where knights could keep guard.
Without the Vikings the middle ages might have not happened because they settled before the middle ages even happened.
